What causes hair loss?
Genes and aging are responsible for most hair loss, but other possible causes include:
- protein deprivation
- hormonal changes of puberty, pregnancy, menopause or andropause
- thyroid imbalance
- anemia
- sever emotional stress or trauma
- endocrine disease or cancer
Blood tests can rule out these underlying conditions which should be treated first. Dr. Malik really cares. You can speak candidly with this experienced, discreet and compassionate expert about your medical history and expectations during your complimentary consultation.
Is it possible to regrow hair?
Yes. Researchers have figured out how to grow hair faster and thicker – without surgery or addictive pain killers – thanks to Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy.
Orthopedic doctors began using PRP therapy 20 years ago to speed up healing in damaged joint tissues after injury or surgery. Then, after research demonstrated that high concentrations of platelets in plasma cells promote hair growth by prolonging the hair cycle growing phase, this innovation was applied to dermatology.
What is the PRP hair treatment success rate? You may be asking this question, as many of our patients do. Worldwide research on the efficacy PRP procedure outcomes is not difficult to find.
An Italian study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences analyzed a group of subjects whose balding scalps were treated with PRP. Microscopic evaluation demonstrated an increase in follicle numbers and epidermal thickness across the board.
An Indian study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal studied men who were using pharmaceutical hair loss medications but experiencing only minor hair growth. After 4 PRP treatments all of them grew 30% more hair in their thinning areas.
You may even meet fellow patients in our waiting room who are finishing up their hair restoration regimen and see such results with your own eyes.
What is PRP, and how does it work?
Your blood is mainly composed of plasma that contains red cells, white cells, and platelets. Platelets are crucial for blood clotting and contain many proteins called growth factors, which enable injury healing and regeneration of damaged or aging tissue.
The platelet concentration (and growth factors) in platelet-rich plasma can be up to ten times greater than that of your standard blood sample. That’s why it’s able to stimulate cell and blood vessel regeneration in soft tissue.
When a blend of PRP is extracted from your blood sample, then injected strategically into your hair follicles, the serum enhances blood circulation and promotes the growth of new blood vessels. This stimulates active follicles to regrow hair.
Your hair regeneration procedure
First, you’ll discuss your medical history, current health, and expectations with Dr. Malik. Be sure to mention any medications you’re taking or any concerns you may have – Dr. Malik wants to be very thorough so you can be very comfortable.
Once all concerns have been addressed, you’ll begin our simple 4 step process:
Draw: approximately 20 ml of blood will be drawn from your arm
Separate: a centrifuge will separate your platelets and growth factors from your red blood cells
Extract: those growth factors (8 different types) will be extracted from your blood and concentrated into a dense, potent platelet-rich serum
Inject: this serum will be injected into the follicles on the hairless areas of your scalp
That’s it – no stiches, medications, or downtime. You can even schedule your PRP session during your lunch break, as many men do, then return to work. Your injection will soon begin to stimulate your blood vessels to regenerate, and your hair to gradually grow in.
How many sessions will you need? That will depend on the pattern and amount of your hair loss, as well as your age, genetics and hormonal balance.
You may be seeing Dr. Malik and her highly trained team for at least 3 months, and up to 2 years. But after your last appointment you’re likely to walk out with a full head of hair!
Like all cosmetic treatments, PRP hair regeneration is not covered by health insurance.
PRP benefits and risks
PRP regeneration is one of modern medicine’s most valuable treatment options because it is:
- non-surgical: no incisions, scarring, anesthetic, hospital stay, or long recovery time
- ease to use: no pills to take or devices to manage
- fast: regeneration begins immediately
- all-natural: no artificial implant materials that can cause allergic reactions or get damaged, necessitating another surgery (and more cost)
- autologous: PRP is created from your own blood, so there’s no risk of allergic reaction or infection from a donor blood sample
- highly successful: most patients report positive, long-term effects
- safe: over half a million PRP procedures have been performed worldwide, and very few patients report any side effects
PRP is typically well tolerated and poses few side effects. You may experience slight swelling, pain, bruising, soreness, or bleeding at the injection sites. This should go away within a day or two. Severe side effects are extremely rare, but if you experience dizziness, fever, rash, fainting, nausea, or vomiting get emergency medical attention right away.
As with all medical procedures, your results will vary depending on your age, condition severity, genetics, general health, follow up care, and environmental conditions.
Am I a good PRP hair regeneration candidate?
PRP is safe and effective for many people, but it works better if your hair loss is recent, because your hair follicles are still “awake”. Follicles that have been dormant for a while are more difficult for even the most experienced practitioner to “wake”. Regenerating hair that was lost more than 5 years ago may not be possible.
You are not a good candidate for PRP if you have:
- thyroid disease or lupus
- hepatitis
- HIV/AIDS or other immune diseases
- cancer
- medications that cause blood thinning or disrupt normal blood clotting
Be sure to discuss your entire medical history, current medical conditions, and all medications you’re taking with Dr. Malik at your complimentary consultation.
